Success Stories
Computer Training

WDI serves as the backdrop to the Department of Labor for all computer-training efforts. Dislocated workers are sent to WDI-funded classes to obtain skills to gain other employment.
Outcome: More than 2,200 individuals were trained, a 94% completion rate.
Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Certification
WDI provided funding to support a Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation
Certification for 16 individuals, most of whom are currently enrolled in
high school. The program, which took place from April 20-22, came about
after a recent law stated that all 14-15 year-old youth who are seeking
employment in the agricultural industry must receive safe tractor and
machinery training.
Outcome: All 16 individuals were certified, for a 100% completion rate.
EPA Certification for Lead Abatement Supervisors
In 2009, WDI collaborated with the Oneida County Health
Department to offer a 32-hour EPA certification for Lead Abatement
Supervisors. All contractors involved in lead abatement
work must man every worksite with an individual who has completed this
training. With the exception of New York City, Oneida County
has the highest rates of lead paint poisoning in New York State. In
2009, the City of Utica and Oneida County received $2 million in ARRA
funding to combat the lead contamination problem.
Outcome: WDI trained 16 union and local contractors/members; funds were used to
target 200 homes in central and west Utica.
