  • North Country TEAM BAC Takes Shape

The North Country TEAM Business Advisory Council’s second 2010 meeting took place on the morning of June 17th at the SUNY Adirondack campus.  This meeting began with the usual round of introductions.  We had two new members join us at this meeting – Tom Ford of the Town of Queensbury, and Caren Snell of Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex (WSWHE) Boces. Thanks for joining us and we look forward to working with you!

One of the main points of this meeting was to determine committee structure for the group, in order to best serve our folks. The four committees that were decided on are Workforce Development, Ambassador, Speakers Bureau, and Consumer Supports. The Workforce Development Committee’s goal is to help job seekers get into corporate training.  The Ambassador Committee is being formed to call on prospective TEAM BAC members and market our efforts and programs. The Speakers Bureau will be the public face of TEAM BAC.  This group would go out to meetings and other functions to speak to the public about who we are and what we do.  Community education should be a key outreach tool for the BAC moving forward.  Perhaps most at the heart of what our group does is the Consumer Supports Committee.  The members of this committee will be conducting resume review, mock interviews, and mentoring support.  This is a great opportunity for our folks to gain valuable real life experience in a supportive environment.

In our first meeting we asked for your feedback, and you all gave us some very good information!  At the top of the list was how to properly deal with the hiring and management issues involved when dealing with those with barriers to employment.  Some concerns were of a legal nature – “What can I ask about a person’s disability?”  Others dealt more with a broader topic – “What support services are available to an individual post-hire?”, “What types of job placements are most successful?”

In response, Stephen Traver, Director of Vocational Service for WDI, expressed WDI’s willingness and availability to the group to share expertise on legal or mental health issues.  RealJOBS NY has partnered with both the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University and the New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS).  Any questions that any of you may have related to these issues should be addressed to Stephen Traver, and he will be sure to get an answer for you....

This meeting began with the usual round of introductions.  During this time we learned that Ray Seefeld’s son recently graduated from Siena and will be transitioning from part time to full time status in his new job, thus removing him from Dad’s payroll!  Congratulations Ray!  Chris Patrie shared with the group that his association with the TEAM Business Advisory Council is his favorite volunteer activity.  Barb Arisohn, in her introduction, says that she has been with VESID for over 30 years!  Thank you for bringing all of that expertise and enthusiasm to the group guys.

We also had two new members join us at this meeting – Laura Zampino of Manpower Staffing and Christopher Mosca of Northeast Career Planning.  Laura is the Branch Manager of Manpower on Western Avenue in Guilderland, and brings with her a background of matching up employers and employees.  Chris Mosca is a Rehabilitation Services Counselor with Northeast Career Planning in Menands, so he has firsthand knowledge of the process of placing our people.  Thanks for joining us and we look forward to working with you!

The main point of this meeting was to determine committee structure and determine who is going to serve on which committee.  The four committees that were decided on are Workforce Development, Ambassador, Speakers Bureau, and Consumer Supports.  The proposed Corporate Mentor committee was folded into the Consumer Supports committee.
